The plane would be stationary in relation to the air around and therefore produce no lift

It makes no difference how the wheels are driven. The fact is that if they are on a conveyor belt, travelling at the same speed in the opposite direction than the plane would be stationary

It makes a massive difference how the wheels are driven, that's the only half decent excuse there is for not getting it.
When you work out that they freewheel it's an easy concept.

The belt could be going a 10 times the speed of the aircraft, and so long as the friction generated between the wheels and the aircraft does not exceed the amount of thrust produced by the propulsion system then there will be a dis-equilibrium of forces thus the aircraft will be able to accelerate.

I thought of a good way to imagine it Planty, in order to give you a better image of what goes on....
Imagine the plane above the conveyor belt, the belt is moving towards to the arse of the plane, the plane thrusts forward in order to lift off against the, that's all simple to understand, what is confusing people is, they think the wheels of the plane play a part in the whole thing, they don't, they just turn around a little bit, so imagine the same again but the wheels are invisible and you can't see them.

the only reason a plane has wheels is to reduce the friction between it and the runway. If a plane could thrust hard enough then in theory it could take off with the whole bottom of the plane sitting on the floor.
So in other words, the wheels are useless in making it take off other than reducing friction.

Sea planes cannot take off going against the tide or against the current on a river. They used to be able to until it was realised that the plane on a conveyor belt couldn't take off.

That's the problem with flying in private jets, the pilots don't get as much practice as a Ryanair 20 minute turnover driver does.
