Also my letters are altered as well, they are illegal but still easily readable, I've had many a traffic car behind me and have done nothing, maybe because the car is german I don't know

Sorry nic i have Dubmeister ones on my car and they are 100% legal. Correct spacing, letter size, reflective, postcode of supplier etc. They are pretty much the only place that do legal ones, was talking to the kid in regal and he said it was causing so much grief that they refuse to do any that are not 100% legal. They have been through 3 mot's and also plate checked by police so i know they are ok.

Nooo, thats what you wanted to hear. How does that statement there make it Legal? Of course Halfords are going to sell them, why not? They sell spray cans and hammers etc. Its not Illegal to sell such items, its their intended use that is.
they wouldnt sell 3/4 plates if they werent 100% legal???
you dont go to the local news agents and find weed on the shelves next to the tobaco do you....?

Honestly, I don't know in regards to pressed plates etc, not going to lie and pretend I know for certain. When I did traffic law we were told anything other than a standard 'manufacturers' plate is illegal.
In regards to illegal plates though, you do have an eliment of descretion on how you deal with it, I see loads but usually when we're on our way to a job or busy with enquiries. Unless it's ridiculous I usually give a verbal warning.
As for someones comment about how normal cops know nothing about traffic, well it depends on the individual officer. Many are more crime orientated and hate dealing with traffic issues, so seek careers in CID, etc. I've been given the nickname of the 'black rat' on my shift as I'm very traffic orientated, and will quite happily deal with traffic incidents when they arise, but this is what I want to do once I've done 5 years or so as a core responce officer.
Oh and specials have the same powers as PCs, can arrest, carry cuffs, pepper, baton etc, still get law training, officer safety etc, just do the job for free!

ok my bit of wisdom for this evening
by law your aloud a minimum of 10mm boarder at the start and end of the reg
so if you have a reg with 5 numbers you can have a minium of 10mm at each side of the letter and allowing you have the postcode and bsa number on the plate
its perfectly legal
HALFORDS do a short legal plate i have 1 on the front of my car
never had a word said
so if you have a short reg you can legally have a short plate
ta.

So its shorter from side to side, but the lettering has remained the same and untouched? So it has nothing to do with a 3/4 size plate

Standard height plates that have been shortend are legal providing the spaces, height is correct etc..
Nowhere does it state that a plate has to be 20.5" x 4 3/8". This size has room for a badge and border.
If you have a 6 charcter plate you can legally have 16 1/8" x 4 3/8". No border or badge can fit though.
If you have a 5 character plate you can legally have a 13 3/4" x 4 3/8" plate, again with no border or badge.
In no regulation whatsoever does it mention plates size. It only has to be correcting spacing, font etc... If you have this on a short reg then you can alter the plate size as above.
Dubmeister have also spent a fair bit getting their pressed plates certified as road legal. Trouble most coppers don't know this and would treat them as other pressed plates
