I'm in a similar situation to you pow, live at home, got a decent job, so I went out, got a 13k loan and bought a Focus ST, together with 23mpg and 2 tyres every 6 months! Do I regret it? Sometimes, until I get in it and give it a good drive.... Plenty of time to be sensible at a later date.....

The only thing I would say, is choose a car wisely in terms of potential depreciation. Try and get something powerful that has taken some of the hit already so you cushion what you loose allowing that money to go towards a house etc. when needed.

Just go for it, will be fun in a small car with 170bhp.
Fifth gear says "Fuel consumption: 47.1 mpg (combined cycle)" , seems optimistic.

That's a bit defeatist Andy! I object to it because its hugely unfair. There are numerous examples where the date of registration of two identical cars put them in different tax brackets. That for me is a silly, silly system.

It's also not based on mileage, again rendering it unfair to those people who do less miles in more cars. Like me.

ps. you'll lose money on the current car and lose money on the new one. I would be buying something a bit older and actually fast.

And not orange

If you lived closer Pow I'd take you out for a blast and change your mind. I'd turn the instant consumption off though incase you topped yourself.

I agree that the entire system should be scrapped and just leave duty on fuel but thats a different discussion. As it is, you don't have a choice but to pay it, so complaining about the difference between £200 and £400 when its your only car seems stupid (imo).

i don't get people who say £205 tax is too much to pay, yet £145 is ok. but are happy to spend £13k-£15k on a car that is crap/slow. When you could spend £6k and get something awesome

Very true. When looking for a 350 i started looking at the ones after 2006 which have a slightly diff interior/and supposedly more bhp but less torque (in real world they are pretty much equal in speed and handlin.) The car in general is more expensive and the tax is double so i decided to get a clean low milage older one for a few grand less as its essentially the same car as Age isn't impo to me.

I'd fucking love an M3 but I couldn't insure one.

You lot seem to be forgetting that I do 15k+ a year!

Anyway, I've booked a testdrive in one, possibily an overnight one so I'll be talking facts and figures with the salesman after to get some ideas...
