Drive 5 mins to the West of where I was brought up and their accents are completely different from ours, more Glasweigen with a lilt.

Scottish Accents... my Accent is really not Scottish (you can prob tell I'm Scottish from my R's but other than that...)
When I'm away I get asked if I'm Irish most of all, Canadian, American, Australian and this time in Russia someone thought i was from Norway. LoL I was born in Aberdeen, my parents dont really have stong NE accents. Spent about 6years in Edinburgh so have a bit of that (not the 'like' and 'likesay' and 'but' and the end of things thank god)
Some Scottish accents are pish.... it tends to be the run down areas that have the shite ones....
Crappy areas of Aberdeen, Dundee, Glasgow, Edinburgh... go to the posher bits and the accents arent as strong, and with that are generally nicer

I think it depends with Edinburgh. If you head into the city centre, you're lucky to even find a Scottish person and Corstorphine etc all barely have a Scottish accent. The rest of the areas you mentioned are all pretty rank when the accent is really strong though Especially Glaswegian! It's that nasal sort of tone they have when they speak, drives me up the wall. You get wee Fife neds trying to copy it as well which is far worse.
