Very true, eck. They're well styled but the lesser.version (zetec s) looks not too dis-similar.
If an rs version were to be made with wide arches, I believe that would.definitely.be a future classic.

Thing is...they haven't got any charcter anymore. Its still based around emissions and all that. Some people like new cars...fair enough, but imo they are heavy, fat and all pretty much the same.
they just aren't as raw...they keep out noise and also the smells and feeling that you get from older cars is what does it for me. Doesn't mean they are uncomfortable, they just feel more 'real'. And you are doing more of the driving, not electronics and all that.

that isn't the manufacturers fault though. They have to make a car that sells to the masses, not to a few car enthusiasts.
the masses want electrical gadgets and nice trim which all weigh a lot.
The emissions stuff is also because the masses cry they can't afford the fuel to fill it and the tax costs too much.
You can't blame the manufacturers for trying to make a profit, rather than go broke.

The RS is a great example of a manufacturer making a car because they can. Looked outrageous when it came out. A 300bhp hatchback with an uneconomical 5cyl turbo. Hence its popularity really.

That is a very naive and broad sweeping view.
Electronics aren't in the way of most normal driving, chassis design and technology is so far ahead of even a 10year old car it makes the old ones laughable. Yes old ones have charm and all that, so did the Clio 182 when it was brand new, and does its older brother.
I think you need to drive some decent cars tbh.
As for the emissions nonsense, why does it have to be polluting for it to be good?
£30k M135i. RWD hatchback that does 0-60 in 4.9 seconds and 155mph. WTF is better than that from the past?! That too is more efficient than older more polluting cars, its not massive either.
Technology moves on, 95% of the time it moves on for the better. Its engineering.

Sometimes efficiency and technology are too clinical though. The fact the new Clio doesn't have a manual is a step forward in shift times but a step back in driver involvement.
Obviously it's not always the case. But there are certain aspects of evolution that make things worse. The other 5%.

I'm not trying impress upon anyone - its just my opinion, and yea - if you like that 1series, then fair do's...but in keeping with that example I'd have an E30 M3...i loved my E30 and if i was looking about - thats where i would go. Its way more than just about figures for me.
The best car i've ever driven/been driven in is my mate's XR2. It's about 110bhp at the wheels but it is so much fun. You could park it next to pretty much anything and it would probs pull more attention. It's palmed off alot of bigger, better and more expensive cars in the time he's had it.
I'm not trying to be ignorant or completely slate off all new cars, but for ME...i enjoy a trip in older cars more.

I'm not usually one to be part of the moaners crew, but that was so staged it wasn't even entertaining tonight
On the plus side, I'd love to do a bit of urban exploration of the BBC TV centre, and I'd also like to take my M3 along that road in the Ferrari bit!
