I'm 22

I'm going into my final year of an MEng in Mechanical Engineering

I currently work for a project engineering firm who design and manage the installation and commissioning of process plants, like breweries, food factories an the like...

I'd like to move into a few different areas of engineering, maybe do more design work than project management work, with an ultimate aim of becoming a self-employed consultant. I'd like to earn 100k+ eventually, but we'll have to see how that one figures out!

Currently product design manager and run the london showroom for a company called Mathmos - produce lighting giftware and the famous lava lamp soon to move on to other products. also lead design manager for sister start up company DeWeNe.

Plan to stay here for another 2 years and become senior altho im already the highest up on the chain, i just want to that title so that im a senior design manager before im 25. quite the achievement for a 23 year old first job out of uni.

after this i hope to move on to become a design manager at a bigger company were the budgets are bigger, more products produced and more money.

Its a 2 part course. First is an HNC in construction and property studies which lasts 2 years (part time) then i go on to year 3 of the BSc building surveying course which lasts for another 3 years

Long time but worth it in the long term and i've worked in property for 6 years and really enjoy it!

I personally find it interesting how people are doing one job, but want a completely different career path. I guess it's because of the lack of opportunities or something when at school? Or lack of focus etc? I've gone to Uni so I can pursue a career I want to be in, which will hopefully stop me wanting to do anything else and lose earnings etc.

Thing is, and not a dig back or anything. But I'd imagine these days people who leave school - 80% at least would 'LOVE to go into media, advertising, television' or something related.

However, the reality is, it's a hard sector to get into (more who you know, not what you know) and you have to start right at the bottom and scrape your way to the top (if you ever make it there at all).

I think a bit like Daimo (VXR) (in a sense) ... there's the difference between optomists and realists. People may 'want' to do something else they enjoy, but they have to be realistic, in the fact that maybe it'll be a lot harder to find a job like that, or the money will be so crap with no career opportunities available that they'll not be able to live.

The other thing is, many people may of really enjoyed something as a hobby, i.e. IT or whatever, but when they were surrounded by it every day and strict dead lines / dealing with dumb people / being told what they had to do they got fed up.

I personally, have done a placement year doing software development, Got a 1st class degree in Computer Science and recently been doing freelance software development for several companies earning awesome money (most of which has been done while I'm lounging around on the sofa at home, or chilling in the sun in the garden).

When I return from my travelling I hope to get a london based Software Development job and go from there. I've always wanted to be a software developer, it's a really creative and rewarding thing. However, when I've been doing it, with strict deadlines and stupid customers giving stupid requirements I may end up hating it too.

Are you mental?

RBS is nothing to do with HBOS.

Halifax + Bank of Scotland = HBOS.

thing i'm finding hard is making the decision to make the change.

I'm comfortable/happy where I am just now, but I can see myself getting more and more unhappy in future.

The job i'm on just now.... I'm a client rep for BP, so the money and responsibility is there. Money could or maybe should be higher actually but I'll see what happens in the next few months.

Its always a big step moving or completley changing your career.

I did a placement at a council IT Dept. for 18months.... Enjoyed the social life of it, but didnt see much at the end of the tunnel. Left Uni and started working for an IT software/hardware company in Edinburgh that was more specialised than just 'supporting networks/windows' etc. Spent 5years with them, Senior Engineer was my title when left, they offered my around 63k a year but i refused it and moved on to a newly set up company.

The new company is a similar operation, but more specialised in planning and QC work for major oil companies rather than the sub contractors. Done a lot of jobs for BP and Exxon direct since, compared to working for the likes of shitey russian edjits before. Got share options, good perks etc so i'm happy enough for now.

I can see me wanting a more stable job with the abilty to plan things (life as such) in the future. I'm out of the country a lot with my current job.

i'm 29

Must have had some portfolio to walk into a "product design manager" job straight out of uni.

Run a company that specialises in intumescent steel coatings for fireprotection on new builds and steel structures. Have my finger in other pies, including property development and sitting on the internet allday trading in shares.

I'm comfortable, I just hope my kids get what they need, that's all that I aim for.

The business brings the bills money in

Good question, I think with the recession taking a grip, most people who are working in banking, building and general contract work are feeling the pinch a little, most firms are paying less because to get contracts people are heavily undercutting.

I also want to own a nice farm in Oxfordshire or Warwickshire
