McLaren F1 £527k to £2.5m in less than 15 years, almost as good as a house

I know its not hard evidence, but looking on PH.....
Brand new VXR's
http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/264138.htm
57 plate, 14k miles S3
http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/818737.htm
I know neither may sell, but residuals seem better for the Audi.

They will do though because the Audi was 10k more expensive in the first place.
Plus, in the current climate people may look past the Audi now and look at other cars as a real alternative, why spend 21k on a second hand performance car when you can have one that is just as good BRAND NEW for 6k less in what ever spec and colour you want?

I completely agree Oliver, you'd be foolish not to look at all the options.
Personally I'd still get the Audi though

I know, but its relative to the original price then. It was just an example to point on that just because you shell out nearly £30k its not all lost as it will still be worth a good amount 2 or 3 years down the line.

yeah you have paid more, and lost more over the same period. when really, you could have paid less for essentially an equal car and lost less.
people have lost more money based on the audi reputation.

I prefer the looks, better built (imo), I prefer a comfier drive rather than a more full out attack car.

The S3 in Joe's example is older than VXR in the example.
In the year and half the S3's value has dropped around 22% when the VXR not even after a year has dropped 15%.
Not really a fair comparison but will be good to see the price/depreciation comparisons in a year or 2.

And Nic, not really. If I didn't work on them then I'd probably have a different opinion, I can see the appeal for other people, decent cars at a decent price.
At the end of the day, long may Vauxhall keep knocking out cars that sell shit loads as its my families bread and butter, if they went bust then we could be up shit creak.

Trouble is non of us really know what the lowest price the cars can be sold for, for Vaux & Audi to make a profit. I know people that have paid 14k for a brand new VXR with 19's (£500 extra) with partners discount etc, and I know people that have spent £22k on a standard Astra VXR.
So to say that Astra has lost however much is irrelvant TBH as it's brand new and could be sold for 22k to one person and 14k to someone else same could be said for the Audi.

Joe is right, the S3 is a car that can be driven like the VXR and to the same effect. Those who suffer from rheumatoid conditions and live on the motorway but also want a belt around the B roads would be better suited to the S3.

You base that on what? An S3 doesn't handle any better than a VXR, might grip better but doesn't handle better. Again you are talking about torque steer yet anyone other than Clarkson doesn't seem to notice it.

honest question as you came from novas like i did years ago. do you not find the steering in the astra vxr's just a little bit rediculous? too sharp, lack of feeling to it. a slight movement of the steering wheel makes the car think your going round a hair pin.
maybe im just more suited to older cars.
