VXR vs R32 (VXR)
Astra coupe turbo with leather weighs 1247kg iirc (which is not heavy considering what your getting)

Good thread

VXR vs R32.

Not being biased because I'm a VAG driver but I will go for the R32. Yes it may have it's disadvantages but don't all cars? But how many VXR's have you seen to R32's?

If you want to pay £6k more for a slower car with a shite 4wd system, go ahead

Plus John, are you thick? You were talking about the Mk4 Golf being lighter than an Astra Coupe, which it is...Just. But it's FIFTY bhp less Now you can go on about tuning it all you want, but you can do the exact same with the Astra, but you have a head start. You can bang on about having 223bhp (which I'm sure is quick as hell, even though a 200bhp one was JUST pulling away from my XSi 16v upto ridiculous speeds), but Phase 2 components and software give 260-280bhp for not a lot of cash for the Griffin.

Aye it does look like the new Civic steering wheel, but it is NOT a Civic in the outside shot. It's a 1 series BMW. Either way I'd have either over one BMW better to drive, Civic more reliable.

And the coupe is a much nicer looking car imo of course!

Inside shot is new civic, outside shot is BMW 1 series, and if you look its not handbrake turning, the rear wheels are spinning!

So we have established that Vauxhall make the best cars full stop. It does not matter what you drive because there will be a Vauxhall that is better than it and you'd have to be mad to even consider buying anything other than a Vauxhall.

VW's aren't very unreliable. Just not reliable enough for the "bulletproof" image they have somehow obtained. The electrics are shecht! And there are certainly better cars out there than Vauxhall, but when asked if you can find a better car than a Mk4 GTi with 223bhp for £5k, it's not difficult Oh, and the premium for buying a new Golf, just because it's a Golf, is ridiculous. Would any of you Ryzer, or Matty go and buy a brand new GTi?

My honest opinion of a mk4 golf is boring, overated, overpriced, but built reasonably well!

The only ones i would be interested in would be the GTI anniversary and the R32.

I would drive it first tbh, but on looks alone i would go for the VXR, my point is the advert is for the vast majority of people buying cars are not petrolheads at all, and just want a comfortable, quiet, good driving car for their money. people who want 'drivers cars' would not buy a brand new gti.

Another thing, the Golf that's on the advert is a GT that goes for £18,995 Come on now, there are loads of cars I'd have before that brand new Even if it's for the daily driving!

I already said the brand new prices are out of this world. I'm just amazed anyone pays it.

Second hand though, they hold their prices well so the premium you might pay over another brand doesn't phase me.

For me the choice between brands for a hot hatch would definately be VXR, GTi, ST, not really interested in anything else in that class regardless of cost.
Edit - second hand only, nothing brand new of any brand.

By the time you've added a few must have options on like Xenons, leather seats, 19" wheels you are getting in to S3 money so I'd buy one of those instead

It's an advert by VW so I suspect they are more interested in impressing boys with weird trainers for scene points.

Sorry what? What Golf? The EP3 CTR is a brilliant handling car, the Mk4 Golf isn't.

I haven't driven a new CTR so can't comment but it's not going to be hard to be as good as the Mk6 GTi so that advert is still a shit load of fuck.

i see exactly what you mean, but the thing is the Anni is stupidly overpriced! its on average 1 k more than an equivalent GTi

no, the golf isnt the best car in the world, no it isnt the ultimate drivers car, its just a decent hatchback that benefits from having a better 'brand' than Ford and Vauxhall,

see Ford and Vauxhall have upped their games recently, and it has caught VW out bigstyle, when the MK3 golf came out it was a huge disappointment, but then you could argue that when Ford brought the later mark escorts they were a huge disappointment, then they brought out the Focus.

VW have a problem, they have built a everyday car but needed to make a 'hot' one to compete, and ballsed it right up from the mk3 onwards, with the development of the 1.8t engines things have looked up for the mk4 gti, but then guess what? Audi also use the 1.8t, so theres no way VAG will mess up their brands by making the fwd mk4 gti as good as it could have been with the 1.8t thats in the S3 for example.

ford dont need to worry about a premium brand, but they made a cracker of a car handling wise with the Focus, which is a good start. then they can pluck the fantastic 2.5 5 cylinder turbo from Volvo to make the ST.

Vauxhall also chose a completely fresh approach with their new astra, well built, looks fantastic, and in VXR form is a excellent car, and in that respect they have battered the golf, and its image. i mean how drab and boring was the mk 5 and 6 GTi to look at in comparison?

BUT my point is the mk4 is not a bad car, for 5k for a decent, well built, well equipped car, i seriously cant think of anything better.
a friend of mine bought a EP3 CTR, with no aircon, now this is a great drivers car, but doesnt even have a bloody clock, in the dash, its noisy and uncomfortable on long journeys, so that prob wouldnt be for me.

blimey longest post i have done in 6 years!

edit: ojc, i was messing about the handling
