Had a works and a normal cooper S. Never again. Rattly, baggy slippy seats, hard ride, noisy steering, shite on fuel, clunky gearbox's to the point where it won't even go in first without a few attempts when cold...list goes on. The R53 also looks very dated now when i see them on the road, perhaps because i owned one three years ago and they were starting to look dated then. Admittedly a lot of the issues have been addressed in the new shape and they do hold their value well.

Did you have a facelift or pre-facelift R53?

Rattly? No.
Seats are baggy if you have full leather granted.
Hard ride is solved with removal of run flats
Shite on fuel - yes
Gearbox is lovel

ANd they dont look dated at all

agreed with the full leather, i prefer the half leather. and i prefer the look of the early ones, definately wouldnt say they look dated at all.
my mum had a cooper on a 53 plate (no idea what model that might be) and when i drove it briefly i thought the gearbox was great! i did have a corsa b at the time though so most things were good in comparison haha!

Warren - they run hot anyway - they didn't measure the intake temps, but I did 3 runs, and it was quite clearly getting too hot as the first 2 runs only made about 170 and 185bhp iirc.

Matt - No it's not an uprated intercooler, just different colour cover with the JCW kit - all the supercharged Cooper S's get too hot as standard tbh - it's all too cramped in the engine bay!

Rich - just looked at your pics

Those seats are shocking in terms of wear - I would not be happy with all that sag

I found the gearbox's very clunky, even on my mrs new (59 plate) mini. The run flats were a nightmare, I'd imagine the stiff ride and poor handleing could be partly cured by swopping them. Dated, suppose that's a matter of opinion. Super charger noise is the only thing they have going for them IMO

That's the problem when it was a dealer demo car to start with, then owned by a fat fook

It did have a worn bolster too, but I fixed that

my sister has one, not sure of the model r56 etc, its a 57 plate.

it has had 2 boxes, and even now its a bit pants to get in gear. the interior rattles, and creaks, and the seats are very unsupportive. she hates how it drives. but it has a bit of pink on it. so she likes it

Mine has a slight rattle/creak from the steering wheel surround sometimes. Just drive it faster and the engine and exhaust note drown it out! Don't think there are many Mini's that don't have some kind of a creak or rattle from what I gather on the Mini forum It's character Although the R53 are supposed to be a lot worse for it than the R56.

The plastics and things aren't as good as my Audi but they are still better than any other supermini I've been in. Saying that though my leather seats are a much better quality leather than my Audi's. But I've got the Championship Lounge leather, not the normal ones.

hmmmm - stop talking about cooper s - I keep getting a crazy urge to go and find another supercharged one. I need some whine in my life again - pretty much my favourite noise in motoring.

First proper car I had - that supercharger was amazing - personally I loved the styling as well - especially the interior.

Just everything else about it was shit and annoying - mine was a really bad friday afternooner though I think.

I have had one for the last 2years and find its a awesome little car.

MPG can be low but depends how you drive it.

www.minitorque.com/forum/forum.php is a good forum for all things mini, the best mini forum if your after power/tuning advice.
