Yeah you don't want your leg fully extended on the downward stroke. Should be slightly cranked.

Dr Pepper, your SPD shoes plus flat pedal and toe clip combo should be ok for float if you remove the toe clips. SPD shoes won't be as grippy on the pedals compared to flat "skate" style shoes.

Just be a man and get spd pedals and get your cleat position right on the shoe. Once that's all sorted and you are used to it no more knee pain. Gotta trust a brother on this

I used my SPD's for the first time on a mountain bike ride on Saturday.
I fell over into a tree. True story.

Lol think my second outing I fell into a van since then not been too bad *touch wood* altho realised since tightening cleats its much easier to unclip.

If you've got dodgey knees I'd seriously steer clear of Shimano SPD.
4X favour them for a reason...because they're super tight meaning your feet won't slip when powering out of the gate.

I had some shimano road pedals for my first set with the yellow tipped cleats. They have something like 15degrees of float and were never a problem.

Need some summer MTB shoes.
Teva Pinner

Five Ten Freerider

Thoughts? The Tevas are edging it at the moment, look a bit tougher than the Five Tens and the other Five Tens I've seen are too bulky

I've freeriders and I love them! Great shoe that you don't look a dick in if you pop into a pub or anywhere else

They do look good and our rides tend to revolve around pubs so that's another bonus.
So how do they stand up in your experience? I've got Five Ten Impact 2 Hi for my winter boots and they are great but absolute monsters to be riding round in at this time of year. Far too bulky and heavy. The Freeriders look a lot lighter. They're growing on me the more I look at them

They are the only proper ones I'ver ever had so hard to compare. They are a bulky shoe though and they aren't the most waterproof, I believe a newer is out / coming out that is better on that front?

Ive mentioned this chap before but theres a local guy who literally goes out on purpose to get KoMs. One of my friends whos a brutal cyclist took a KoM off him last week and he got all upset and commented on his ride about it
Hes taken 4 of mine recently, 2 of which were mountain bike ones. I know this geezer doesnt mountain bike so I have no idea how he did that

Those cheap jackets they've got for sale with the removable arms to make in to a gilet might be worth a buy, will have a look in my lunch hour. Been after a cycling gilet for a bit but they're ridiculously priced.
