Yeah, I watched Goonies the night before. Took the disc out and put Fifa in and got the same shitty chequered screen you did and then noticed the red ring.
Checked online and warranty is up, but my question is when my original Xbox broke I sent it back and they sent me a brand new one back so this one is barely a year old but according to their records and the serial number of the Xbox it's out of warranty.
KISS MY ARSE MICROSOFT YOU KILLED COMMODORE.

Mine is currently in for repair, I got an E74 Error which is just hardware or something. I only got the bottom right ring. Stolen my brothers in the meantime!
Ollie you might aswell get another one they're peanuts nowadays!

OJC, red ring is repaired outside of warranty free of charge, if its the correct red ring (there are several for different error codes)
edit - also it wont be a new xbox they sent you, it will be a factory refurbed one which had a red ring repaired before
