Thats good for you and im sure a lot of school leavers and jobless people will do the same, but it still doesnt solve the countries job shortage.
there isnt enough jobs in the UK to accommodate every person needing one.

you are in the public sector in a school pow in IT, it will never pay well even manager level. You need to get into the private sector and you see more than half your wage increase.

I would say 40k would be an average wage for an IT manager in the public sector in a school down south. Hospitals and what not would be considerably more.

My point wasn't neccessarily about working up from the bottom. It more related to the OP moaning about working 42 hrs a week for 4.80 or thereabouts.

Take my mate whose just gone to an 80k job in Costa Rica with ridiculous perks and benefits on top. 5yrs ago he was on a trainee contract for PWC working "professional hours" for 16k. As in, 60hr weeks working out at ~£3.84 an hour. He didn't spit the dummy and go off to work 16hrs for double the hourly rate just because of minimum wage regs.

Trainee wages are often crap because it weeds out the non-hackers. 42hrs a week @ 4.80 is more than 16hrs @ 7.00, sure the benefits skews this, but 16 @ minimumish wage plus benefits is only ever going to be that. 42 @ 4.80 may well have lead to 42 @ 10.00+

Slowly turning into a willy waving thread. Its no embarassment if someone is in their 30's on 25k a year? Some people survive on less means so they have more time for other things in life.

My mate is a site worker (on less than 25k too) and the combined income of him and his missus is fairly low but they still managed to get a decent mortgage because they live a pretty modest lives and saved for quite a while. He's in a better position than me so I cant really knock him for not wanting much of a high flying job.
