In a word No. Not really.
It's a media streamer, the only advantage it has over ps3, or WDTV is that you can use it for Airplay from your Apple branded devices
(And it's shiny and has an apple logo on it)
That's my opinion Davey will be here shortly telling you why it's better than that

What about the fact that it can take 1080p video, mkv (standard for high-def, for you noobs, Gary, Davey) and play almost any other file format?
Oh, and play content through the usb port!

That WDTV actually retails for £99 from reputable retailers and you need to buy a storage device and a wifi dongle plus it doesnt do half the stuff the ATV does out of the box.

To be honest, depends what you use it for. Davey and Gary obviously don't download much and thus stream from website such as MegaVideo so it's perfect.
I on the other hand like to have my media downloaded so I can watch it whenever and instantly in the highest quality.
One of these boxes would be perfect for my Mum, bang it in the front room with Plex or XBMC installed and have it look up a networked hard drive/server with TV/Films/Pictures on and jobs a good 'un.

Means you can use your iPhone on your TV, so if you have a film, or mp3s etc... on your iPhone, it would stream through the AppleTV box onto your TV.
As Noshua said though, AppleTV only does 720, not 1080 that your current ps3 setup does

When i was peeing around with XBMC on the ATV2 it'd accept 1080p material but it'd downscale to 720p due to hardware/design limitation. Interesting if it actually outputs 1080p; have you got a source or info about 1080p output?

Some right lines in here, DVDRip format, Full HD DVDRips, Think you need to be a virgin also to be that elite.
@willay - I had a Popcorn Hour A-110 (second gen of the first version, updated to support SATA drives mainly) and I ditched it for a VDPAU (i.e. GPU that can de-code HD material) system - Acer Revo.

You can also get Full HD DVDRips Davey's like the video format version of Bubble, leaking AV secrets on CS!
noshua - Why did you change to the Revo? What frontend are you running?

So in summary:
If you are not an UBER NERD with a 1TB spank-bank this is the device for you! You dont need to have a NAS full of movies and you dont need to spend your life finding and downloading them.. Also you dont need to leave your PC on!

Do any of these media streaming boxes support Love Film or similar? The Apple TV does look like a pretty decent idea, but iTunes video rental is pretty pricey.

From what i remember LoveFilm haven't released API access to online content, so plugins (Plex for example) tend to be bodged flash players which run ok but aren't brilliant and have bugs. But then again i found LoveFilm to be pretty piss poor with regards to online content.
A better bet would be to get a Netflix account + VPN (few free US ones that work ok) and use a Netflix plugin - XBMC's Netflix plugin was pretty decent last time i used it.
As for standalone streamers, off the top of my head i don't know any that support LoveFilm (again due to API restrictions). There are a fair few that support Netflix though, Popcorn Hour being one of them.
Edit - Worth installing XBMC/Plex and trying it out.
