Well my slow cooker adventure has begun!
I bought the Tesco £9 one this morning
I am trying this recipe:
http://www.netmums.com/family-food/recipes/a-z-of-family-recipes/beef-or-sausage-casserole
And you can see it all mixed up here ready to go

I have set it on 'High' and expect to be able to eat at 7-7:30 giving it 6-6.5 hours cooking time.
I added a few bits and pieces like some chilli flakes so we shall wee how it turns out!
If it starts to look like it is drying up, what is the best thing to do? Just add a bit of water? Or a splash of red wine?

Tonight's curry

Tomorrow's stew is going to be tomorrow's chilli because I got mince out of the freezer instead of the stewing steak

A suggestion I have for gravy or sauce is spoon off some of the juices and reduce it in a pan (boil it for ages till it thickens)
Just done it with the red wine stock and made it in to a thick red wine sauce and it's mmm mmmmmmm
Because when your doing like a slow roast joint the liquid it a bit thin and runny to be used as gravy
I'm going to do it with the remaining sauce later and freeze it for future!
Wish I'd done it with the cider stock too, would of made like an apple sauce

I'm going to give it a stir and give the veg a prod to see how firm they are still. I assume that I will know its done when the veg are soft (like when potatoes are boiled ready for mashing)?

Soften some onions in a pan with oil, butter, ginger and garlic.
Throw in some peppers, I also put in a couple of potatoes this time and a tin of chopped tomatoes.
Spices, you can use whatever you have got, that's just about what I've done. Paprika, cumin, fenugreek, garam masala, coriander, turmeric.
I also cut a chilli up and put that in.
Bring all of that to the boil with the chicken then transfer it across to the slow cooker, or just cook it in the pan, chicken ends up better with the slow cooker though.
All measures are about a teaspoon, I don't pay that much attention to it.

Have been using my slow cooker for stews for ages now. Always do the same though. Chicken with loads of mixed veg and chicken stock/gravy.
Whats the best meal you have made so far? Im liking the sound of the gammon/cider combo, whats the best reciepe?
