There's a few like this on the forum. Pretty sure they come into a thread, see what the general consensus is then argue for the opposite side, no matter how illogical it sounds.

I'm thinking about taking out a loan to buy my next car, i don't just have £9000 sitting there like most folk seem to have, but i want a nicer and quicker car than i have now, so why not!?

Plus, it must be worth it for an R32

No mate. Unless you save you can't afford it. How dare you make the most of a legit way to raise some money! Who do you think you are?! A non-portfolio owner?!

being the proprietor of this thread i have to say i never thought id cause such a stir.....

point 1 is im not looking into finance i never would, im looking into a bank loan...... the car im looking at is not for the total cost of the loan, i will be having some home improvements carried out like a porch which i could just sling on my mortgage but dont see why when it will cost me 10 times the amount of over the years!!

over the past few years ive been incredibly sensible living the life people are claiming i.e saving and paying cash etc excluding my mortgage but as previously said i think ive earned the right to be maybe be a little reckless and i can comfortably afford the payments and i dont see why i should wait!!!!! one thing which has also thrown me a little is the loss of 3 of my best friends in recent years so out of the 6 of us who were a group if u like there are 3 remaining.... thishas opened my eyes alot and made me want my dreams an m3 so im thinking go for it to be honest...

i only think debt is bad if u cant afford it... i can afford the payments more than comfortably so i dont see the problem, if shit hits the fan im more than covered considering the equity i have on my house and the assets i already own outrite currently

I love loans and credit cards.

I could have saved up and bought my car outright after about 18months saving I reckon, which isn't too bad - but I'm an impatient bastard and instead of saving up I would have just spunked my money on fishing gear and computer games. Yehaaa

Instead, I pay £320 p/month - I got the car immediately when the engine was falling out of my old one and at any point I can afford to sell the car and settle my finance. In the meantime, I just spunk slightly less money on computer games and fishing gear every month.

Love it! Also, going on holiday thanks to a maxed out credit card.

Enjoy living within your means, peasants

Seriously though, I'm barely paying any interest on my non-mortgage debt because I'm doing it cleverly - and realistically I could afford to settle everything I owe in a very short window of time if I had to or wanted to.

If people have got £300 per month disposable income and they're spending £200 of that on a car finance repayment - I'd call that a bad idea, because you're not left with much to fix it if it breaks or whatever.

Also, car loans are much better if you can put a bigger deposit down - get ahead of the depreciation so you've got an escape option at any time.

That sentence doesn't sound quite as good when it's read as 350 a month for a 318 petrol, which is a bit more accurate.

Love a bit of salvage, last few cars have all been cash and cheap. A3 has cost me 2k for a car worth 5/6k and will either be run into the ground or sold for at least what I've spent on it. Average joe wouldn't be able to tell it apart from the ones that are 10k+ Only way ill do cars now. Personally wouldn't want to get onto debt for one but can see why people would.
