Odds on that happening in January slashed this morning, 4/7 currently

The question is, would you do a direct swap with Rooney. I think I would.

I would just hope the lack of game time the past few months hasn't set him back. And no I wouldn't swap with Rooney. Rather sell him to a team in another league

It's a lot of money for someone that hasn't played too much recently

I'd have him for £29m.

He's 25 not 18
United would instantly be a better side with Mata in it, as would Chelsea actually.

Agree. Its not EXACTLY what united need, but it does pose a formidable front 4 which might mean actually scoring some goals and creating chances
Granted it doesnt solve the defense woes but you cant fix every position with one signing.
It also makes a statement of intent, lifts the squad, gets some of the fans back on side, and encourages other players to perhaps join in the summer.

Reports that SAF has personally spoken to Blanc to sort out a deal for Cavani, although I cannot see that happening until the Summer, im also not that convinced about the player.

He hasn't played that much, not bothered about his age. Might have lost a bit of sharpness and fitness. Or he might still be exactly the same player that he was the previous 2 seasons in which case great.

cavani isnt goign anywhere for much less than the astronimcal amoujnt they paid for him, certainly not to this utd team!
have to agree with gnev i think, mata is not the right signing... you already have kagawa and rooney who play #10 role, are you gonna play
Mata Carrick x Kagawa
Rooney
RVP
?
A swap makes sense, spunking £40m on a duplicate role player when the squad needs major surgery may not be the wisest... though perhaps Moyes may be thinking of flogging either Rooney or RVP at the end of the season

Arsenal did the same thing with Ozil though and it improved the team in other ways

Maybe Moyes is planning on doing something different with the formation. Or most likely we won't even sign him

Fitness and sharpness return with games, you said you hoped it hadn't set him back which is normally a comment reserved for a developing talent who misses game time when he's young.

Arsenal needed a striker in the Summer and signed a world class attacking midfielder....
Sometimes you have to bite the bullet when a certain player becomes available, Mata is one of them IMO. The fact he can't get a game for Chelsea despite being one of the most creative talents in Europe the past 2 seasons is a joke.

Agreed, but thats mostly because Wenger is a loon we still need a striker yet now its draxler who looks most likely I think the biggest issue is the huge price being touted for Mata, when they need to spend money elsewhere... that said, could probs recoup a fair bit in selling tat!

youd need to move to more of an Arsenal/Chelsea style 4-2-3-1 for that to work though
ie
Carrick Fellaini
Mata Kagawa Rooney (interchangeable)
RVP
Actually, things dont look so bad when put like that...

To be fair, from what I've seen of Cabella, he looks quite a player More of a number 10 than a CM like Cabaye though.
