Can anyone reccommend a mountain bike for someone to use as a starter? Not wanting to spend too much.
I used to have a GT bike, but I think I paid over the odds for the brand name and paint job...
Also, if it matters I am 6'3" and weigh just over 81kg

Buy 2nd hand and depends on your budget if you buy cheap and really get into it you buy twice on the other hand you might hate it.

Chain gang tonight, its usually a 30 mile route with 3 laps of the circuit. Tonight was probably not the best night to make my first appearance of the year on one as there was some very strong riders out on the intermediate ride, like a guy who does 52 minute 25 mile tt's. Sat in the red averaging about 22mph going through and off. I got spat off after a lap and a half of doing all my turns and not sitting in. Back out again next week to try and make it to two laps.

You want to try averaging 17 mph on an exercise bike in half a converted garage with no air con and no breeze as you're "moving".
Sweaty.

I would probably only want to spend around £200. It's not for every day use (like riding to work) its more sort of a casual bike that will be used a couple of times a week.

I joined Strava and managed to import all my data in from Runkeeper Now what (apart from go ride)? Seems there's a lot of healthy competition built into it.

add people to see what they are up and depress you when they are out alot more than you are , they do have monthly challenges you can sign up to as well and all the leader boards etc.

You can get a nice 2nd hand one for that. Check out Ebay to see what is local.

Weather is great at the moment for riding, only draw back being the foliage growth! Some of my routes completely obscured by ferns and the like, even worse my arms and legs look like I'm a self harmer from tall the scratches! Got a good few days planned, chilterns ride this evening, llangedla on Friday and Gisburn forest on Saturday, maybe somewhere near my mates places in Shrewsbury on Sunday too

Make sure you do the black at llandegla, it's great fun. Also the black section at gisburn called hully gully is well worth it.

hay guys
I really want to recycle an old bike of mine, its a Grisley - see below
http://i.imgur.com/tBl1KYd.jpg - BIG photo alert.
I took it to a friendly bike shop and he confirmed that most components on it are fucked (I've had the bike over 10 years, has been on long time loan to friends so its seen some abuse ). Reason I'm not getting the bike shop to do it is because they are hideously expensive on bits compared to online. Now I want to get this bike back on the road/paths but I don't want to go bankrupt. The frame is slightly bigger then my muddyfox, its a 8speed and the front forks are wanked.
So bearing in mind I have little to no idea what I'm doing here, I'd appreciate some guidance if possible?
The bike is a 8 speed, I'd like to keep it that way to save me changing bits like the shifters? I've picked out the following bits online:
Shimano M410 Alivio Chainset
Black, 42/32/22 tooth, 170mm
Shimano Alivio M410 Rear Derailleur - long cage
Shimano Alivio M412 Front Derailleur - top swing
Shimano OE M324 SPD Pedals
Shimano HG51 Cassette 8-Speed - 11/30 or 11/32 tooth? what difference does that make on the ride?
For tyres I was looking at Schwalbe Land Cruiser 26 x 1.75 MTB - the same ones I run on my other bike for commuting, I can't complain about them so far!
Now the bits above have been picked on price/8speed/same model numbers as the other bits, so any feedback on my unguided choices would help.
Oh and the front forks are completely goosed, I'd like to go for some solid forks on the front now as I've had my suspension locked on my other bike and dont really see the need to have any suspension on roads/paths that I travel on. What do I need to look for? whats a good price on a set? what size do I need?
Alot of questions and I appreciate everyones help.

Think the main difference is connectivity and touch screen isn't it?

Fuck getting touch screen on a bike computer.
Especially if you want to use it in colder months and are wearing full finger gloves, surely it just wont work. Unless it has auto scroll. That would annoy me too though as I would never have the data I wanted on the screen when I looked. Would end up crashing waiting for the data i did want to flash up

I have a Garmin 800 with a touch screen. It works fine wearing gloves, it's not got the same type of screen as say a phone has so gloves work fine.
