ok, work out 99.5 + 39 and 99.5 + 39% please.
Answers according to my calculator is 138.5 and 138.3.
As i said sooty didn't say 39bhp he said 39 and i assumed it was 39%
and the answer is about the same.

Surely if the car's estimated flywheel power is 138.5bhp and the power measured out the wheels is 99.5bhp the car LOST an estimated 39bhp in the transmission...
So transmission loss = 39 bhp
Fly wheel power = 138.5 bhp
The proportion of power lost is simply 39bhp out of 138.5bhp, or:
39 / 138.5
Which equals 0.2815
To convert to a percentage you simply multiply by 100...
0.2815 x 100 = 28.15% lost in transmission...
Just seems this argument is about the definition of the fraction in question. Percentages don't work the same in both directions obviously. If you following the 39/99.5 equation, you would be calculating the fraction lost out of the total taking into account the fraction already lost, which doesn't seem to make much sense as you can't work out of a fraction of something lost when you've already subtracted it...

But surely you haven't lost it already Tim as the RR reads power @ wheels and the fly fig is threoretical.

yes wot u are sayin is rite dave but they work out the flywheel figure from the drag. so the drag was 39 bhp thats wot they added on to the @ wheel figure to give the estimated fly wheel figure and the % loss is then made from the 2
