Please stop filling this thread with facts. It's quite clear public sector workers are paid a pittance to work in piss poor conditions and now the nasty politicians are stealing their pensions to give directly to their rich friends.

im at the very top of my scale at 24k thats because i have been there years
most people around me are on the 20k mark, and that is for first line onsite technical support and network management of various sites.
one lad i know up'd and left does something similar for Halcrow and earns 30k+

20kish for a standard tech support role is good.
The 30k Halcrow job will be more infrastructure management and knowing more than how to reset a password in AD, which the 20k jobs don't.

What do you mean by installing servers and what are you defining as a system?
Installing XP, or Server for that matter isn't difficult.
How is the email handled? What are the servers doing?

yeah john-d when i say it support i dont mean some guy sat on a hpone resetting passwords, i mean we install complete systems for people from scratch.
this obviously requires knowledge of all server os, exchange, and client operating systems
not to mention bespoke software that our clients in education use, eg SIMS

nope, which was exactly what i pointed out earlier, that public sector get it a lot easier, but dont get paid to be stressed like private sector employment, it really boils down to personal taste and what you want out of life, money or stress free easy life

some people choose to get paid less, but have less stress and geater job security.
some people like to push themselves and earn as much as they can
but the point im making is public sector arent always on a cushty well paid number
well iv certainly not seen it in Worcester, apart from those at the very top, which i agree, there salaries are disgusting

My input to this thread is I work very closesly with a council every single day and all of them, to a person, are as thick as fucking mince.
I could write a paul_j style post on their stupidity, all of which costing the taxpayer tens of thousands of pounds. One off the top of my head...their mail takes 3 days from the time a stamp is put on a letter until it is in transit because a) their internal mail audit procedures and b) they went out to tender and Royal Mail didn't win.

Money is just haemorrhaged in any public body I deal with. They won't spend money on certain things that keep the system running yet are happy to spend 1.5k on a scanner x4 for adjoining desks, instead of getting 1x 100 quid bit that does the same thing.
I could go into a random council office and have saved them thousands a day in 1 shift, I'm not sure why that doesn't happen, it does in the private sector.
