I did Cannock last weekend, Follow the Dog and Monkey Trail; was okay and I enjoyed it - a hell of a lot of ascending though by comparison to the short bursts of downhill.

in terms of time; You seem to slog up mountainous and twisting trails, only to ride down a fairly boring fire track. There were certain elements where we felt like the trail had been run in reverse; as in what would have made awesome downhill sections with burms built in were actually the uphill slogs. Some of the ascents are virtually impossible to ride up too; incredibly steep and slippy as hell - one thing to watch though is that there are quite a few diversions and trail closures in place and as such some of the make-shift trails aren't as user friendly.

Was only messing, know cannock well. Think thats the key to a good trail centre, one where you don't feel like you've spent most of the time climbing

Don't forget with the switchback climbs it makes it more interesting than a long fireroad or just going straight up.
Last time I went to Cannock there was some pretty gnarly black (I think, may be red) options on the Monkey trail.
Don't forget it is in the Midlands, not exactly mountaineous. They can only do as best they can. It will never be as good as natural trails in the Peaks or Wales. The bonus is you can ride all year in relative safety. Plus someone is liable for you riding so they can't make it too gnarly.
Some people think all trail centres will be as good as the next because it is a designated trail centre and they all fall under the same banner.

I really like cannock, parents are in Bham and I generally pop over for a morning ride when I visit. Yeah there are a couple of black options on the monkey which I think is a red itself.

Yep, Monkey is red but the first part is closed at the minute and there's a diversion-I like Cannock, don't get me wrong. It just seemed in places to be back to front; switchbacks are fine but these were more bottom side burms than topside switchbacks-I think mainly because. As said above, half of the monkey trail is shut.
There are a couple of really gnarly blacks off and back on to monkey trail so for those who aren't as confident, you're not heading in completely different directions!

I've been riding a rigid 29er single speed this evening oh my it is so much easier than using gears the only downside I could find is that I like to pedal downhill

Think I'll be ordering that Genesis Latitude I posted about in the other thread some time soon. Visited a couple of local shops and they weren't actually that helpful (I would have actually bought from them, so I wasn't wasting their time  ), so I need some advice on sizing. I'm 185cm/6ft 1 tall - can't decide whether to get a 19" or a 20" frame. How much difference can that 25mm make?

19" I reckon you'll be alright on. Will make the bike more maneuverable.

I'm seriously considering getting a single speed way I see it is I don't use my gears much where I ride I will still have my hardtail with gears if I fancy a proper blast

I'm 6ft and on a 19 not much in it tbh would go bigger than a 20 isn't there somewhere local where you can try a 19 or a 20" feame

Dad is 5"10 and rides a 17.5". I'm 5"6 and ride a 15.5" or small. Do the math.

I have a Specialized Demo 7 from 2007 which weighs 42lbs. This was once light, but now it is a weigthy bitch and for all these flowy bike park trails it is getting a bit cumbersome. 7" travel gets you out of sticky situtions and can take a huck.
Had a go on Dad's Morewood Kalula today. I reckon it weighs between 36lbs and 38lbs. Oh my fucking god. This difference was incredible. It actually gained speed on the dual at Chicksands Bike Park where mine slows down 
I'm now searching from frames online to put all my bits on. Needless to say there are many midget smalls out there.

Just got back from doing some trail at newcastleton in the borders. Great couple of hours just took it slowly. I'm actually quite slow at the downhill bits oddly. Need to find myself a bike to do such things and have a few more goes.
