Decided to go ahead and get the car booked in to have the bushes replaced with superpro polybushes.

Spoke to a bloke in work who had ghem on an impreza (powerflex) and he loved them, so hopefully I'll be the same.

Now need to get up early saturday and drop the z4 off and empty my bank account in the process.

Swapping for harder bushes is one of the worst things I've ever done to a car

I went from rubber to nylon though, I'm sure polyurethane is a much nicer compromise.

Don't do it! Convertibles don't suit polybushes. Totally upsets the balance of rigidity.

Worst thing I ever did to mine and wasn't even the whole set

They seem to be ok. The ride was very firm with the fk springs on, but quite nice with eibachs.

It's not exactly rolls Royce comfortable, but it's not back breaking.

I did enquire as to whether these bushes will make my ride hard as it's a daily and the receptionist who hae her golfs bushes changed said they were a good compromise between comfort and great handling.

I guess on a bad piece of tarmac, the ride will more than likely be rather crashy, but I think I could live with that for the advantages of having better responsiveness and nicer steering/handling.

True. My southern cousin couldn't hack it anymore and moved up north to be a proper man. That and cheaper house prices helped.... Haha

The problem with convertibles is thus, nothing to do with being a wuss, it is completely down to boring old science I'm afraid...

If you have a steel shell with half the structure missing, it will wobble. To get around this they design suspension to absorb the undulations and lumps into the road, thus absorbing the forces being ploughed into the car.

Add polybushes and something weird happens. The suspension absorbs the bumps and stays planted (so long as you didn't get mega stiff ones but most are not suitable for UK roads) it simply transfers the bump....

Guess where it goes



Yup, the wobbly shell! Will feel super firm, then instantly like it's made of cheese. Anyone outside of the Internet whose driven a new car or two (like you Ben) will largely think it's ruined it.

Too stiff for bumpy UK roads, will skip, especially in the wet. Will trash the ride and give you scuttle shake from hell.

Get your cash back and don't do it!

The standard suspension definitely isn't designed to absorb bumps from the off. Not the greatest setup in the world.

I drive a 107 most of the time now so I find the z4 quite harsh now, always think something's broken after getting back behind the wheel

Too late now Jambo, but it's going next spring so not too long to wait if it does ruin it

I do understand what you're saying and I can see the sciene behind it, but surely bushes that don't have any play in them will be better than shagged ones that have done 90k?

They need doing either way and i'm not interested in taking the car apart again if they do trash the ride, I will be honest about it. We shall see by Saturday afternoon

And yes, the missus' new fiesta is so comfortable compared to the Z4 and handles lovely.

If they could replicate that in a nice bodyshell with a powerful engine for decent money (new mustang), i'd be all over that.

Am slowly converting corrado back to all standard suspension and bushes, although only a couple of poly ones on it.

The thing is with the internet and recommendations is people don't fit new bushes for any reason except the old ones are buggered and they might be comparing 15yr old factory bushes to brand new poly bushes and they just say the poly are amazing.

I was told on corrado that changing certain bushes for poly is ok but not all of them, was advised to stick with OEM rubber ones for certain places.

Can't imagine the Z4 is nice to drive around here with those wheels, suspensions and then poly bushed.

gaptech module fixed for the 3 time the scotchlocks are awful and keep coming loose. Need to solder the wires together eventually.

Also removed my clear rear lights to re-tint them. They were lacquered but they've dulled a little and a mate in work said my rear lights look orange at night. Standards back on for now.

I don't like that they're not symmetrical, Gav otherwise I wouldn't have changed them for the Hella ones.
