do the rallye and gti use the same block? (wats the cc of both) if so then i cant see any reason why it wouldnt be a direct fit.

As kris said it'll be ok to fit on if it's the same block, you could argue reasons for or against it making it quicker, I'd have my doubts though, as i'm sure the gearing would loose u high up power?

Steve i think the boxes are indentical, its the S1 rallye box that has super close gearing and silly ratios. When you are doing 80 your revs are like 5500rpm or something but quality for acceleration.

Closer ratio box will make for faster acceleration but lower top speed. YOu need to check the gear ratios and the final drive for the Rally and compare with standard. Try U2U ing LuckyB; he has a Rally and is pretty clued up.

Steve a lot of people who have had 16v conversions into s1 rallyes have kept the rallye box and their cars are well rapid.
