They boost the output voltage of your RCA preout, usually to around 8vRMS.

so the higher the voltage of ur preouts the better?? Does it give you better SQ or summit??

suppose to, put as the saying goes - put in shite, you get shite coming out So yea it does boost your preouts, but any imperfections on the signal will also be boosted.
Although im curious to know which amp will allow an 8v input? most of them are between 1-5v, i take it feeding a stronger preout voltage into the amp wont harm it or anything? just that my pioneer is wacking out 6.5v preouts and im looking at getting a alpine or PG amp, and the inputs on them are rated around the 4/5/6v area.

still curious on the preout / amp input question though can i wack a 6.5v preout into an amp that rated at 4/5volts? shouldnt do much harm should it? or will my amp go up in flames or sumthing

It will probably damage it. It will just clip constantly, even when you turn the gains down to THE lowest setting, because your shoving too much in it just destorts. My mate found that out with a Pheonix Bass Cube once...
