fitting a 20xe next week not sure if I can afford the samco hoses so do I go for them and push the boat out even further or do I get bonnet struts and a strut brace to help with suspension

Strut brace won't make much if any difference to your handling.
Get the hoses whilst the engine is out of the car.

thats what paddy corsa said whos doing the engine but its another £80 on top and I am already at the top of my budget here spent £650 on the engine and £600 on parts then theres labour and oil and daft parts he will need to finnish the job mate

He sells compleate silicon hose kits at a good price.
My Cav gsi set (9 Hoses) cost me £150
As for strut brace it does make a difference when changing directions fast.
On my 16v nova it helped loads when on the track doing fast corners
