i wanna run win 98 and win xp at the same time xp on the C: drive and 98 on the D:
Is there a way i can choose which OS i can boot up on startup?

Yup, put XP on C and look for a file called boot.ini in the root of the drive

ideally i want a menu on startup asking me which os i want to boot. giving me options to boot 98, xp, or command prompt.

yesh u can hav a dual boot, but ive forgot how... it shud auto ask u i think wen u install the otha

Righty, well find that file and open it up, it should look something like this...
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
If you're Win98 install is on D: for example, just add the following:
D:\windows="Microsoft Windows 98"
Make sense?

ok cocker how does this grab you ... make a default boot of 98 with a startup disk for xp that stores your modified boot.initialise ......... magic
If you want 98, no disk - if you want xp, startup disk

In XP,
Goto control panel - system - advanced - startup and recovery.
All your options are set easily here. The edit button will open the boot.ini file for you to edit. Simple.

That'll do it, providing your win98 installation directory is called windows.

Sorry to jump in here guys, but doesn't the fact of whether his drive structure (NTFS or FAT32) play a big part in this? Surely if his XP drive is NTFS, the win 98 installation wont be able to pick up the xp installation once booted, etc. (Even though on diff. drives - wont be able to read files, etc).
If its FAT32 formatted then fair enough. Thought I would just point it out and save probs in the future.

good point the allocation table structure could mean reading will be one way only. However I thought both were FAT 32. I really have fell outta touch with this considering Im in the final year of my computer science degree !!!!!!!

Fair enough mate, wasnt trying to step on anyones toes. What you quoted should work fine, just wanted to make it aware though just in case probs do occur.
