cus people wont bid then , and they can still sell it to the highest bidder if the choose to , even if you dont meet the erserve price.

If the start price is 99p and you bid £600, it will show the highest bid of 99p, unless someone starts bidding you will only pay 99p

The thing is - what you'll find with ebay is someone will be on the look out for a bargain...
say some lexus rear lights (new style) - they're worth about £80-100... but you see them for £50! (reserve at £80 though)...
£50 is cheap so you bid, not knowing where the reserve will be set. Someone else will bid against you and you'll get into a bidding war. Even though you may now be over £80 and reserve has been met, because you've spent time bidding and perhaps have considered these yours - if someone out bids you'll probably think 'hmm... well I'll bid 1 more time and hopefully they won't re-bid'
This is why things that were bargains end up going for a lot more than they're worth.
If however the person had put it up originally at the high figure that they would eventually have gone for - most people would probably think they're overpriced and not bid in the first place.
