Does it affect your computer if you leave it running for 3 whole weeks? i read in the paper that running your computer longer actually makes your components last longer However wats ur view on this?

it can help in a way as they will stay at a constant temperature rather than hot cold hot cold etc when it's switched off and on

I thought constant starting up and shutting down put a higher strain on your HDD's?

Yeah it should do so long as it stays at a controled temperature.

Same as running a car, you will get more miles out of it going up and down a motorway at a constant speed than stopping and starting through town!
