I have £1k to spend, for the £ what would be acceptable details or spec.

Ones i have seen so far have over 100k miles, rust, or are diesels, or automatics

Im looking for a cheap one that wont need too much work done on it.

So details like rust, mileage, tax, mot, paintwork, interior, engine size.

What sort of things should i attempt to look for

Why not?

I want a little car to play around with, not touching the C

would prefer a corsa b over other similar cars like nova, clio, saxo
