boot into compute

goto control panel, administrative tools, computer management

on left side, click the Disk Management option & wait till the snap-in loads

right-click the CD/DVD Drive & select Change Drive Letter or Assign one & then change it to an unused letter...

if its not in there, then go into the Device Manager see if its disabled & enable it if it is.

Sounds like you might have an i/O conflict or something, heck in event viewer under system for any event failures (the red ones). Thats also in admin tools somewhere.

Hmmm, sounds like a computer problem to me. Try tackling the problem, and taking it from there.

I thought you said it was being seen in the bios?

If not then check the cable to the drive and then the jumper settings on the back of the drive, is it plugged into the same ide cable as the hard drive?

driver problem, since it appears in safe mode with a default driver loaded rather than the original driver. Download one off the net for your make and model of cd-rom easy as that.
