Have been thinking about doing this for a while now. Is anyone on here a retained firefighter or full time firefighter?

My brother is Retained, one of my best mates was also for a year then joined police.

Sometimes wish I could join, but don't actually work in Ellon, and work is miles away from nearest retained station, so it's not as if I could run with Kintore(think they have retained??) during the day and Ellon at night/weekends.

He really enjoys it, got a good social side to it as well.

However, not the greatest when you turn up to a car crash and have to cut folk out their cars, especially when dead, and especially when it's young kids.
It's kind of harsh, but it has made him wise up a lot with regards to his driving style, and he gave all of my sisters mates a bollocking one day after attending a fatal crash involving a young guy in his Nova, told them he didn't want to have to cut them out of a car as they all drive like wankers.

It sounds quite good so far from all of the people I have spoken to about it.
I think I would be ok with seeing the gory/unpleasant side of it. I've seen horrible before, first hand (one of my friends died in a car accident) so think I would be ok with it.

retained is where you commit to a certain number of hours per week, which your 'on call' you have to remain within 5 minutes of the fire station at all times, you have a pager and have to go to the staion when your pager goes off. You get paid a retained fee then paid for each incident you attend and also a fee for attending a drill night for two hours a week.
