Right, I have just configured Gmail to operate via Outlook (POP3) and all is fine BUT I tried sending myself an email and it doesn't appear anywhere, does if I log onto Gmail though :S

Now... I also have an AOL IMAP account setup and it has its own set of folders as it were... I'm using Outlook 2003 and I have personal folders (which it does't use for AOL) and then a seperate set of folders entitled impa@aol.com - which is what is used for the AOL stuff. So I changed the default to Gmail for the time being because I thought that would set Outlook to work with Gmail but it still won't appear... how come?! I have ran the test Connection and all is fine and my AOL is still working OK... I have also ensured that when I send the e-mail that it is sending via Gmail :S

Maybe I need to leave it 10 minutes to feed through?

If you have AOL Broadband you will not be able to send via SMTP as they have no SMTP servers that you can use in Outlook,

if Gmail has authenticated SMTP use there server.

Any open mail relay.

Most require you to be on the same network ie. dialled in or BB through the same people.

smtp.blueyonder.co.uk if you're a Blueyonder customer etc.

Trouble is, anything that is open is inviting spammers straight in.

AOL don't appear to allow outgoing mail unless its from an AOL address.

Yeah but if you're using AOL SMTP you must use the AOL address not the Gmail one.

I use smtp.ntlworld.com they don't ask for Auth, and it's pretty quick too.

Robbo - have you tried the GMail program for setting it up automatically that's on the Gmail website?
