boss at work is thinking that he wants to set up a proper network here.

at the moment we have:

2 Mac G5
1 Mac G4
1 Imac G4
2 x Large Printers

The G4 doesnt get used much (only for scanning)

he saves ALL of his work to external HDD that he takes home with him, but hes worried if he drops/loses it, all the work is gone.

The macs are all networked at the moment, but no via a server.

he wants somewhere we can back up all our data and transfer files over.

1 )we were looking at the Apple x Serve: http://www.apple.com/uk/xserve/

would this be good for what we want?

2) i did think of getting a huge external HDD, and plugging that into the network, and just dropping files into that, and jus use the network to transfer files over?

3) Setting up the G4 as a server and whacking some big hard drives in there?

what you reckon?

Depends how much data you have (intend to have in future) and how much data will be transferred.

Based on the amount of computers on your network at present and providing the G4 is of reasonable spec, i'd just use that..

500/1000gb would be nice

If you've got the cash, go for the XServe with loads of disk space inside.

setup a little network via hub will ba good enough for you, 100MBPS file transfer rate and the server is 2.3 GHZ and dual so fast enough, it's also stacckable so can have more than one and have plenty or staorage.
also supports RAID, fault tolerance storage.

i wouldnt use an apple server, there expensive for what they are - i would get a dual intel system with plenty of storage. Or use a network storage device - there are loads about and storage can be as high as a few Terrabytes worth, so plenty there - plus it just plugs into the network so no need to pee about
