Hi everyone,

I've been thinking about buying an mp3 player for the last couple of months and I think i've narrowed it down to a choice between the rio carbon 5gb and the ipod mini 6gb! I just can't decide which to go for!

Help please!!!

I think most are much the same to be honest, although of course, the ipod is very popular due to its cult status...

Do you think that the small amount of space would be enough though? I guess if you don't have many songs it's okay.

I have got loads of songs, but just plan to swap them over when I get bored. I just thinking having a larger unit e.g. 20gb ipod would mean I carried it around less often?!

iPod support would possibly be alot better due to the fact so many people have them. I have one and have had no problems at all - theres lot of forums about for iPods though which would help you!

The price difference probably isn't too big between smaller and larger models so just go for the 20Gb if you can.

1. GF bro has one and its very good
2. Made by Apple so it will be great anyway
3. The integration with iTunes is fantastic
4. Lots of accessories available for them.

I have both units. mine is the carbon rio and the ipod mini I brought for the gf.

Both machines are very capable it all depends on what you will be using it for. Carbon is a lot smaller, a lot lighter and the battery life is brilliant! So if you are getting one for walking about, earphone use, riding bikes, sports etc (like I do) then its perfect and is better than the ipod, its got loads more features and can be used to hold all sorts of media files unlike the ipod.

However if you want to use the MP3 player as a personal player and for use in car, home, friends houses the IPOD is the obvious choice. Itrip will let you tune into any radio, bose systems let you slot it into to make a full on home set up, and genrally there are a heap of good accesories for the them - on the down side battery isnt anywhere near as good as the carbon, the accessories will soon bump the price upto £200 IE Itrip, plug in charger (you dont get on in the box - it charges through USB 2.0), new earphones because I think the apple ones are crap and thieves do look out for them, and lastly you have to use itunes to sort your music and that encodes different to any other player.

Ipod mini is around £139

Carbon you can get from the USA for about £80 or £100 on ebay shops.

Like I say its all about what you need it for, we have the best of both worlds.

You can a refurbished 4GB mini here for under £100, but 4GB seems quite small really, and think they could not be the latest generation.

Apple were doing refurbished 20GB (3rd Gen) iPods for less than £150 not too long ago, think theyve stopped now though.

Edit - Argos are doing a clearance offer on a 4GB mini - £109.

Get something with bigger capacity

And iPods are bad because you have to buy add ons for all the extra stuff that is built into other mp3 players...
