always had abit of play in the gearstick so thought i would lift the gaitor up and have a looks. When i wobbled the stick around the plastic ball that sits inside the metal ring isnt tight against the metal, is it supposed to be like that or does anyone know how to sort the problem out, thanks!

the thing is, its just the gearstick that wobbles, nothing else.

Get to the scrappy and find the lowest mileage one you can, and replace the stick. You can also pad it up with tape or something, but this is a botch and won't last long.
You need to dislocate the pin at the bottom of the stick to remove but its not a big job.
