i have some blank dvd rw cds but my laptop wont read them, says they need formattin or summat..hows this done?

and yes i do have a dvd rw drive

you cant use windows explorer to write to any sort of DVD on XP

you need Nero or something else which can do it, nero will also be able to format ther DVD
