I went TDI because it ment I could have some power and have a decent MPG. I have a vectra CDTI 150 get 40mpg urban. I needed a big car so a small displacement supermini was not a choice for me. the nice thing about this car is that is it takes off quickly, very responsive. turbo spools from 1500rpm. I'm probably spending about the same because diesel costs more than petrol and my previous car got just slightly less mpg. smaller tdi's in smaller cars give much much better mpg though

Didn't Clarkson say on Topgear that the BMW 535d averaged 16mpg round the track.
