Yes, definatly. Unless its been swapped for a power hike (which is gonna cost £££ to insure) you should worry that its been hammered a lot. If so it aint just the engine that pays for a hard life the rest of the car does too.

Yes, unless the guy who you are buying it off says it has had a new engine, for example for performance reasons beacase a 40,000 mile V reg car should not need a new engine unless it has been hammered or there has been some serious mechanical faliure due to lack of maintainence...

Anyway, seeing as the threads up, Ed, I disagree. The 1.2 8v may have less power, but it is a better overall engine. I know two people with 1 litre 12v's one in a B and one in a C, both keep going wrong with sensors etc.
There's no way you can really check if a second hand car has been hammered is there?
The only thing is to look for blue smoke which would indicate it's burning oil?

If the car had been hammered the clutch may be fucked.
The 1.2 8v is shit , no doubt about it but still fine for a 1st car.

Clutches aren't overlly expensive though, 200 quid fitted MAX, think it was more like 150 actually

there's a few different checks really, but an AA check would be ideal for piece of mind. and a HPI check would be good as well to know if its been in any heavy crashes

Thirsty isn't the word for it. I'd say more dehydrated. Shocking mpg for such a small microwave motor

I didn't dig it up, someone posted before me but deleted it.
EDIT - Hence why I said "2 years old" and "while it's up..."

But whats the point buying a car to spend £200 on a clutch and knowing in the back of your mind that it could have been ragged leading to a whole host of problems?

There's not mate, I was just saying the clutch is the least of your worries if you know it's been ragged to fuck
