when i let my petrol guage get near the red, not on it but near it, the engine management light comes on and it feels like the car isn.t running as smooth as when its got say half a tank! what could this be? could it be choking crap out of the bottom of the engine, or is it likely to be something else?

Sounds like its a faulty sensor, does your petrol light come on??
Get the code read by a scanner and it will tell you!

hhhhmmmmm..... It possibly could be since the light is not coming on, but if your gauge is moving to the level of petrol youre putting in, then it would seem its working.
Best bet mate is to take it to an auto-lecy or garage that would have a scanner, then they will tell you the fault code the ecu has recored and the code will corospond to a fault.

Why not read the fault code off? Then you will know.
