i think they are great cars. they're really nice to drive, hold the road well and are very responsive.
which one are you looking at? new or old? they just did a facelift on them. the 2.0 sport now comes with a 6 speed box and cruise control, as well as other standard bobbins like bose audio.
i work as a salesman for mazda by the way so if you need more info post in here or u2u me

2.0 sport petrol is £16330... they have a 1.6 diesel at the moment, but in december production they're making a 2.0 diesel with 143 bhp... the same engine that is in the higher powered diesel mazda 6's

yeah the 1.6 diesel has plenty of poke, the 2.0 that is coming out will really shift.
do you have any dealerships near you that you could go test them out at? is a place called washington near you?

i live approx 1.5 minutes from washinton
insurance/cost purposes id consider the 1.6 like. as i say i want to change car next year, should have new job by then. toyying over ideas atm. was thinking of selling the astra now(ish), getting a corsa for a year to save some cash and then getting 2.0tdi golf, but as i said, had bit play with the mazda today and liked it!

there really nice cars. i work for a mazda dealer (www.thedonaldsgroup.com).
all of the mazda3 range drive really well but the best is the mazda3 sport. 2.0 16v 150ps (bhp). the newer face lifted models have a slightly more powerfull engine and have had the handling tweeked even more.
i personnally prefer the 3sport saloon because its more in preportion as the rear bumper doesnt stick out anywhere near as much as the hatch bumper. the front bumper and bonnet are also slightly different.
the one to wait for though is the new mazda3 mps which is due to come out in a few weeks time. the 3mps (mazda performance series) has the 2.3 16v turbo engine in it producing 260ps (bhp) and runs front wheel drive but unlike the astra and focus, its supposed to handle brilliantly as all the teething problems in the astra and focus have all beein ironed out.
they do a 1.4 16v, 1.6 16v, 2.0 16v and 2.3 16v turbo petrols and a 1.4 16v and 1.6 16v turbo diesels

i know 3 of the sales people from the mazda garage in washington. met them all on courses a few times. if you go in there's a really sound lass called jo that works there.
insurance isn't too bad on them, i'd have to check on the diesels tomorrow to get the exact group

ok the mazda 3 diesel model comes in 2 engine powers... 90bhp and grp 4 insurance, and 109bhp and grp 5 insurance
jamesvavlver has pointed out a few things, just to clarify though the mps is 240bhp and mazda don't make the mazda 3 with a 1.4 diesel engine
