I know there is quite a few mk 4 owners on here and quite a few 1.8 20v t owners too.
Looking at one tonight for the misses, just wondering if there is anything to look out for? other than the obvious.
cheers

Fuel pump is a fault and can over flow, causing the car to cut out.

there bad for. window regulators, throttle bodys choking up, oil strainers choking up, waterpumps packing in, air mass metere, centre exhaust box hangers snapping, rear axle bushes splitting, front antiroll bar bushes knocking, rear washers leaking, door loks packing in
My mate just told me to write that, hes a time served mechanic with VW

Anti roll bars tend to start knocking, need a new bar and bushes
Coil packs used to pack up loads, but seems to be sorted now
Air mass meters sometimes go down, not as much as the diesels tho
Lambda probe pack up regularly
As broster said the throttle valves can also pack up
Window regulators have a tendancy to fail leaving the glass in the door.
The exhaust center silencer brackets break and rattle
Some of the breathers collapse with age
The secondary air pipes get brittle and break..
Thats all i can think about at the mo...
Oh, and the one i looked at this morning had the clutch pressure plate and friction lining welded together because they got to hot from abuse...

Yeah reckon your right, i think its the same with most manufacturers really, get one that has already had loads of probs, likely to hace loads more, get a low milage minter with out many probs should be
I am actually really excited that she is gettin a decent car, 1000 times better than the 206 xsi she is selling!!
