Does anyone know if it is possible to change films in avi format etc to mp4 so i can put them on my phone to watch?

Look for a program called iSquint.

I have this application and use it exactly for this purpose, the only downside however, is that I use a Mac, so not sure if it's available for Windows (If Windows is what you run)

iSquint is Mac only.
Look for a program called imTOO MP4 Converter it should do the trick.
