Director James Cameron has confirmed that he is to make his first film since the 1997 smash hit Titanic a sci-fi adventure called Avatar.
The filmmaker has been pursuing other projects since the success of Titanic, including documentaries for which he piloted submersible craft to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean to film the actual wreckage of the famous sunken ship.
He is now ready to return to the big screen, however, and his new film has been tipped to be just as impressive as any of his previous works.
"We're going to blow you to the back wall of the theatre in a way you haven't seen for a long time," Cameron told the Hollywood Reporter.
"My goal is to rekindle those amazing mystical moments my generation felt when we first saw 2001: A Space Odyssey, or the next generation's Star Wars. It took me ten years to find something hard enough to be interesting."
Pre-production on Avatar is already underway but the finished movie, which will be filmed in 3-D and merge live action and animation, will not be released until summer 2009.
The film will centre on the story of a wounded ex-marine who is sent to colonise and exploit an alien planet, but finds himself engulfed in a battle for survival alongside its inhabitants
