I would get a 944 Porsche for that sort of money. Granted you will spend the whole 1.5k to find a half decent example. But it could be done!

209 GTi 1.6 - One of the ebst handling hot hatches of its day. 1.6 is supposed to be the better all rounder than the 1.9?

2.0 16v Astra GTE - Cheap as chips, good pace fror price. Can be made to go round corners, lots of cheap parts.

Renault 19 (although i wouldn't swap the engine, the 130bhp 1.8 16v is plenty). Although power delivery is too smooth and lame, but goes well.

AX GT? Tinny sardine can. As quick as a C16 Corsa GSi, very light, can be made lighter, but 3 stud, ooo eerrrr.

MX5? Dunno if one can be bought for £1500 though.

Nova/Corsa XE. Same as Astra.

MEtro GTi? Hadlands prooved you can polish a turd.

Low spec 325i E30 BMW? Or 320i? RWD fun.

Well, I'm doing a budget track car for a friend of mine;

1.6 GTi 205 blown h/g £150 (9months mot/3months tax)

fitted
1.9 8v £20
1.9 brake calipers £10
Ferodo prem pads £12
Full bleed 5.1 fluid £5
Quick shift (beer tokens for welding)
set of 1.9 wheels with yoko 539's on £100
PAS rack with PAS removed £30
sunroof plated (beer tokens)

That's apart form service items.

No point lowering a std 205 as the rear becomes comparitively more soft and jsut induces understeer,

Next on the list is a 24mm ARB to replace the std 20mm one on the back and may drop it 30mm too.
