Can't help with specifics with the X14XE, but I had a shed load of trouble getting an alternator out of a 1.5TD engine bay cos it wouldn't fit between the radiator/slam panel and the engine to come out the top (power steering pump didn't help), and wouldn't go between the engine and the front cross member to go out the bottom.

Ended up taking it out the wheel arch by disconnecting the front tie rod bolts and dropping the tie rod a little. Might be a suitable technique for yours if all else fails.

Is the problem that it is jammed, or that there isn't enough room to manoeuvre it out?

The former can be solved by making sure you have all the bolts, it shouldn't be too hard to pull out. The latter can be solved by removing bits until there is room.

I only had to undo 3 bolts on my alternator to get it out, 2 on the pivot between the alternator and the lower bracket, and 1 on the tension adjuster at the top. The pivot bolts often have a sliding collet in the bracket that needs a little persuasion to let go.
