what would a lower et number mean?? is it futher out ie more likely to scrub or will it be closer(more inside the arch).

Offset is measured from the wheel mounting surface to the centerline of the wheel. There are two types of offset - Positive and Negative.
Positive Offset is when the wheel mounting surface is outside of the wheel centerline.
Negative Offset is when the wheel mounting surface is inside of the wheel centerline.

Lower means its further out.
Its the distance between the bolt face and the centre line of the wheel, therefore zero means your hub bolts to exact the middle of the wheel looking down on it.
49mm on Vauxhalls mean that the wheel sits 49mm further under the arch than it would if the offset was zero and hub bolted exactly in the middle.
