VTRs are only about 90hp aint they.
Pretty much what a standard 1.4 16v is.

No chance.
There's no way I would have got 131bhp from my 1.4, no way at all.
I got 130 from my 1.6 with the same spec, with cams it would have been about 140 at the most....

my 1.4 used to fo 34mpg
my 1.6 does 38mpg on the same daily use, measured by filling, using most the tank, and then seeing how much to brim, a few times.
so that makes up for the tax difference if you clock up a few miles a year!

They will tell you that tho, to sell their products...
Its like Kent claim the power gain for their mildest set of 1600 16v cams is 10bhp.... When realistically its probably 1/2

mine made just short of 150, but ive got extensive head and block work...with pretty much the same spec...
[then again the rollers could have been miles out]

Blueflame BFO 2.25" exhaust system
Chipwizards remap with 7200rpm rev limit.
All in all, it cost me about £700 (but would be about twice that with brand new bits), and a standard 1.6 was quicker, and cheaper to insure.
Panel filter
Modded airbox
4-2-1 manifold
Decat
2.25"system
103.5bhp
now have a mantzel powerbox, superchip, so should see 120-125bhp now

Is a 2.25" system not a bit too large for a 1400?

Indeed.
A 20xe is 150hp, and only has a 2" system....

still made good mid range torque with that bore exhaust 98ib/ft i think
power graph 103.5bhp
all that just a exhaust system

Did the job for me.
Someone on here is having a 2.5" system on his 1.6 in the near future...

Haven't you got a Mantzel, cams and headwork?
Broster made 8bhp more than me with EXACTLY the same spec, plus a worked head, so that, cams and the other type of inlet would see a little more power.

all ive done to my 1.4 (only an 8v sri though) is induction kit, ashley competition exhaust system and decat, and power has gone from 82bhp standard to pushing 90bhp.
to put it into perspective, induction kit cost me a combined £25 (£10 for 'max power' cone filter, about £15ish for samco pipe), decat cost me £30 and ashley cat back system cost me about £150
the cheaper little things like a decent direct cold air feed and de-cat are good ideas. may not make a massive difference, but every little helps
but like people are saying, would be cheaper and much better to get a 1.6 gsi lump dropped in. thats what im hoping to do, aint gonna spend more cash on my current engine tbh

Yep, the de-cat/system would give that type of gain.
Good engines 8v SRi's are.
