I had my 1998 gti for just over a year, used it every day in all weather and even had it on the 1/4 mile a few times and I NEVER suffered a single problem with mine as unbelievable as it might sound
spoke to the guy a few days ago that bought it and he still says its goin strong with over 100k on the clock and NO problems
