if it has a plastic inlet manifold then its a C16XE
if it used a lot of oil and was smoking then i would think head gasket. let me think did it start happening afer you went on a bit of a hard drive?

if the smoke is black and its popping and banging I would assume its overfueling.
However if its using oil it could need the rings doing too

look at the plugs
if they are black they are over fueling or the cars burning oil. they should be a off tan colour if the internals are working right

read off some codes of the ecu as well as that is usually a good indication if a sensor is at fault

depends maybe maybe not.
AS for the smoking if it smokes blue under load it will probably be the rings or if it smokes coming down the revs it will be the stem seals.
Unforunatly its a common thing on the older gsi engines im having mine done next weekend............

easy way to check the ring is to take the car on a little run get it warm, drive down a hill or something and let the cars engine breaking slow you down, when you've slowed down a bit then boot it again ans see if there is a puff od blue smoke, if so the rings are gone, doing the rings you can do this on the drive as fortunately the xe engines can be almost completely stripped with the block in the car still.
