basically i had a corsa and stripped it left the private plate registered to it not knowing it had to be taken off before the tax and mot ran out. now they wontgive me it until i re-register the vechile, tax, mot and get it inspected.
now to the bit am confussed about. i said to the man well i will pay the full price of the plate again asif i was buying it from new. they saidthe plate is scrapped with the car and will never be used again. my brother done the exact same thing with his private plate but his is now forsale on the dvla website.
seems to be one rule for one person and another for the rest.

If the car has had no tax for more than 6 months, and no mot for more than a year, you have to get the car "road legal" to get the plate off.
Get an MOT on it (one way or another) and tax it, send the V5 off and claim the tax back, you'll be £50 down but the plate will be yours again.

My mates MOT ran out a few weeks ago, can he still transfer the plate or does it need to be re-MOT'd taxed etc? Cheers

By the sounds of it you wont get the plate back.. you will have to have the car fully road legal to get it off.. if you had declared sorn immediately you would have been fine
