now instead of bringing an old thread from the depts of the archives just want a simple answer to this question i have (about a 1.4 16v v-reg sport if that helps any!!), i found this in an old thread:

Just back from Vauxhall. It was the Temp sensor. This was tricken the ECU into thinking that the car was running hot and therefore the engine was ajusting the timing to stop the car from pinking.........but as the car wasnt running hot it was pinking
now from this i have gathered my sport is "pinking" (i think anyway - has the symptoms described) and also my temp guage aint working and i dont think the fan kicks in - this will all be linked wont it - if the sensor is bust the guage wont work and the car will run shit yeah?!
also could this cause the "jerking" as if i have filled up with "kangaroo petrol" - just want to know if all this could infact be caused by a dodgy temp sensor?!
ALSO - if anyone has a pic of where to find the temp sensor it would be much appreciated so i can have a look and maybe get a new one and try that!!
Cheers in advance
Jon

IF YOU HAVE POWER STEERING.... ITS NEAR THE FRONT (LIKE A LITTLE PLUG SHAPE THING)
RIGHT NEAR THE TOP OF THE ALTENATOR BELT WHERE IT NEARLY MEETS THE PULLY, LIKE ON TOP OF THE "S" SHAPED WATER HOSE FROM THE RAIDIATOR... (HARD TO EXPLAIN)
WILL POST A PIC UP TONIGHT... OR POST A PIC OF AN ENGINE BAY FROM THE FRONT+ ILL EDIT IT USING MY PAINT SKILLS

Temp guage isn't related to the Coolant Temp Sensor. Their both different systems.
The temp guage is for the dash. The CTS is for the ECU.

Doubt it. Usually emissions problems, but for the money (around £12 for a vaux item) it's worth changing anyway.
It's the blue one that your after, located on the thermostat housing.

Thats it!!!
+it caused kangaroo juice petrol!
Mine was unplugged...
Welll there's a ground (iirc) attached to it aswell... Make sure thats connected just behind the plug on a pin shaped thing approx 5mm in lengh just behind it...
Like a big pin head // the little wire off the plug goes onto it...
